Rock County Humane Society helps Emma find good home.

A Happy Story from the Rock County Humane Society.

A letter written to the Humane Society by the dog's proud owner.

I am a student at the veterinary school and was only toying with the idea of getting a dog. Each week, a group of animals from a local shelter comes to the school to be spayed and fliers are posted of available animals. In November, Emma was among those animals and I fell in love with her picture.

I arranged to meet her, but the timing was not right, so at the end of a week, Emma went back to the shelter. By December, I had gotten approval from my condo association, but to my disappointment, Emma had found another home.

Little did I know, she would be returned to the shelter less than two months later.
I used the next several months to focus on school and consider adopting a dog more seriously. By April, I decided that I was ready and began looking on petfinder.com. To my surprise, Emma was listed on the website! A couple of friends and I made the trip to Janesville to meet her again. Emma
She was as sweet as could be, but quite thin. We were told that she was getting very stressed from being in the shelter so long. We all wanted to bring her home, but there were concerns that she might not get along with my parents’ dogs, as well as the cat that lived with me in Madison . Since my parents live on the other side of the state, it was not possible to do doggie introductions at the shelter. Instead, the shelter and I worked out a foster arrangement that would allow Emma to be come home with me right away and meet our family dogs without making the adoption permanent. By early May, I was making a second trip to the shelter to bring Emma home. She settled in well with my cat in Madison , and two weeks later met the rest of the family without a problem. At that time, I decided to make the adoption official. We are now staying at my parents’ home in the country for the summer and Emma has definitely come out of her shell. She loves to be the center of attention and often follows us around the house. Her favorite things include running in the yard and pastures, playing with squeaky toys or her kong, and sleeping in the bed. She has learned several commands and hopes to start obedience school soon. I can’t thank everyone at the shelter enough for their support in helping us find the perfect addition to our family.
